Nestled at Mile 79 on the scenic Seward Highway, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC) spans over 200 acres, embraced by the majestic Chugach Mountains and Turnagain Arm Inlet. Originally founded in 1993 as Big Game Alaska, the facility transitioned to a nonprofit in 1999 and became AWCC in 2007. Today, it is one of Alaska’s most meaningful and inspiring destinations, welcoming over 100,000 visitors annually.
🦌 A Sanctuary for Alaska’s Wildest
AWCC provides refuge for orphaned and injured animals that cannot return to the wild. From grizzly bears, moose, and wood bison, to lynx, eagles, and muskox, the center offers a safe home in expansive, natural enclosures that allow these incredible species to thrive and educate the public.
A shining example of AWCC’s conservation work is the Wood Bison Restoration Project, which successfully reintroduced over 130 animals into the Alaskan wilderness after near extinction in the U.S.
🧭 An Educational and Immersive Experience
Whether you visit in the summer or winter, the AWCC offers powerful learning moments. Guests can join:
Moose and Bear Encounters
Guided “Walk on the Wild Side” Tours
Interactive wildlife talks with naturalists
And during winter—kick-sled, snowshoe, or fat-bike the scenic 1.5-mile loop!
With each encounter, you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of Alaska’s ecology and the urgent need to protect it.
