When you think of sled dog adventures, you might picture gliding over snow-covered trails, crisp Alaskan air, and the excited barks of eager dogs ready to run. And while our guests experience all of that at Alternative Alaska Adventures, there’s something even more important happening behind the scenes: a deep commitment to sled dog wellness.
Inspired by Leaders in the Sport
We take inspiration from the Pike Dog Wellness First Initiative, a program founded by Iditarod supporter and attorney David Pike. His mission? To ensure sled dogs receive the highest level of veterinary care and attention — a mission that couldn’t be more aligned with our values.
Pike’s program has provided critical financial support to Iditarod mushers, covering everything from routine checkups to diagnostics, vaccinations, and even holistic care. It’s a shining example of how the mushing community continues to evolve — placing canine wellness at the core of the sport.
Our Approach: Putting Dogs First
At Alternative Alaska Adventures, we work closely with Iditarod Champion Ryan Redington, whose team embodies the highest standards of care. Our dogs are family — and partners. We prioritize:
Routine veterinary care
Rest and recovery time
High-quality nutrition
Proper gear and training techniques
Emotional connection and mental stimulation
When guests visit us, they don’t just see dogs in harness. They see happy, healthy athletes that are loved, respected, and thriving.
An Experience That Educates and Inspires
Our tours aren’t just about the ride (though the ride is unforgettable!). They’re about immersing yourself in authentic Alaskan dog mushing culture, learning how our dogs live, train, and rest — and why their well-being is the foundation of everything we do.
Whether you're joining us for a sled ride through snowy trails or enjoying a cultural experience at our kennel, you're supporting a business that stands proudly for dog wellness first — just like David Pike envisioned.
Join Us on the Trail
Come meet our dogs, hear their stories, and see what it means to truly care for a sled dog team. At Alternative Alaska Adventures, wellness isn't an add-on — it's a way of life.
